About BCS Ottawa

The Section was formed in January 2003 by a group of 10 BCS members living and working in the Ottawa area. The principal reason for forming the Section was to ensure that BCS members in Ottawa and in other parts of North America could benefit as fully as possible from their BCS membership.

The Section achieves this by providing a local forum in which members can meet and get involved, and by forging closer links between local members and the BCS in the UK.

In addition to this main objective, the Section now pursues a number of other goals:

  • Presenting a varied and interesting series of technical discussions and presentations.
  • Building relationships between the BCS and local Canadian professional bodies, e.g. CIPS, IEEE, etc.
  • Supporting mobility of BCS members and computing professionals between the UK and Canada.
  • Pursuing recognition of BCS professional credentials and Chartered Engineer status by local professional and engineering institutions in Canada.

The Section has grown since its formation and there are now approximately 15 local members participating on a regular basis. Other local groups are invited to any meetings that may be of interest to them and this section has also participated in events organised by these groups.
