| Abstract: | Doing Business In The Information Society
Electronic commerce is now well established in Canada, but it is still accounts for a small percentage of sales.
The presentation will review the latest figures for electronic sales by Canadian firms, both within Canada and abroad,
as well as for the electronic purchasing patterns of individuals in Canada. The economic activity will be related
to current policies relating to Internet use and the support of the infrastructure that makes that use possible.
The presentation will end with a discussion of international influences on electronic business.

Biography of Bryan van Tol
Bryan van Tol is employed at Statistics Canada by Director Fred Gault in the Science, Innovation,
and Electronic Information Division. Mr. van Tol has served as unit head of the Survey of Electronic
Commerce and Technology for the past six years. Prior to his work with the Business e-Commerce unit,
Mr. van Tol worked at Revenue Canada, where he was responsible for the annual Tax Statistics on Individuals
publication. In 1997, he joined Statistics Canada, working on deliverables to the United Enterprise Statistics
program for the Project to Improve Provincial Economic Statistics (PIPES). He then moved to Investment and
Capital Stock Division, where he conducted both quarterly and annual survey work. Over the years, Mr. van Tol
has co-authored numerous papers on the use of ICTs and e-Commerce.
