Panel on Consulting: Cautionary Tales from the Coal Face

Speaker:Peter Pettengell (Moderator),
Abstract:

For many of the BCS (Rideau) Section, earning a living as a consultant is a long-established way of life; for others it is a new and intriguing option. Members of the section who are established consultants, will give their views on, amongst other things: opportunities and pitfalls; government and private sector consulting; virtual teams; bookkeeping and taxes; and incorporation.

The aim of this panel is to highlight the best practices in IT consulting for both experienced and aspiring consultants.

The main areas covered are:

  • Business issues (incorporation, accounting, taxation, etc.)
  • Consulting to the government (standing offers, consulting companies, RFPs, security clearance, etc)
  • Consulting to private industry (finding contracts, confidentiality, etc)
  • International Consulting – US/Europe (border issues, taxation, SOX, etc)
  • Self employment (balancing home and work, setting up a home office, burning the midnight oil, vacations)

The panel will also share common resources available to assist in the field of consulting.

The moderator will be Peter Pettengell who has had many years of consulting experience in the Ottawa area.
